Turbomachinery plays nowadays an important role in many aspects of our lives. They are the propulsion of almost all modern aircrafts, are used in the field of power generation or are an important component in process industry plants. In order to meet the ever-increasing demands with regard to efficiency, emissions and performance, a deep understanding of the thermodynamics, aerodynamics, and structural mechanics of turbomachinery is required.

The numerical simulation of the flow plays an important role in the development of modern turbomachinery. With increasingly complex blade geometries, many simplified methods are reaching their limits, and efficient further development is only possible using complex numerical simulations. The aim of the course is to demonstrate the basic relationships and methods of Computational Fluid Dynamics, in short CFD, paying particular attention to turbomachinery-specific aspects.

In the first part of the course, after a brief summary of the fluid mechanics conservation equations, the essential methods of a CFD code are developed from the standpoint of a finite volume method. The focus is on the fundamental mathematical analysis of the partial differential equations and the derived spatial and temporal discretization methods. To solve the resulting systems of linear equations, the most common iterative solution methods are discussed. In the second part of the course, specific turbomachinery-specific aspects will be highlighted. Including principles of mesh generation, turbulence modelling and boundary conditions.
