The IST is active in numerous research areas. In addition to classical turbomachinery, innovative energy conversion systems such as low-noise, hybrid-electric aircraft propulsion systems are researched.
When technical phenomena cannot be fully captured experimentally or the testing of different variants is too time-consuming and cost-intensive, simulation tools are used. At the IST various numerical methods are used.
The large test rigs are used to provide a realistic replication of the flow conditions in turbomachinery for various applications, which are used by the industrial partners in current or future products.
